Outside the normal age group?
Include the request with SET registration and explain your child’s educational, social and emotional circumstances, with relevant professional or school evidence. The Trust decides in your child’s best interests. The SET cannot be used as an earlier practice test or taken twice.
The entrance tests

- Multiple-choice English and maths. Meet Sutton Grammar’s SET standard to progress.
- Second stage
- Written maths and English, shared with Wilson’s and Wallington County Grammar.
Both stages contribute to Sutton Grammar’s qualifying standard and ranking. Marks are adjusted for age and income deprivation using the 2019 IDACI; a qualifying result is not an offer.
How is the combined score calculated?
The policy does not publish a complete weighting or adjustment formula. Ask Sutton Grammar admissions for an explanation of your child’s outcome; another school’s formula does not apply here.
Where you live
Two allocation pools use the listed postcodes. Remaining places are open to eligible boys from any postcode.

- Your child must live at the CAF address on 31 October 2026 for postcode priority.
Shared care or moving home?
For shared care, provide a joint declaration of the living arrangements. Use the home where your child spends most of the school week. If time is split equally, parents choose the address; without agreement, the policy uses the address registered with the doctor, taking all evidence into account.
Your home council checks residence. Tell it about any move and supply the evidence it requests. An address used only to gain priority may invalidate an application or offer.
Applying while living outside England?
Your child needs a linked address in the relevant local authority area and evidence that they will return before September 2027. It must not be an address of convenience. Contact your intended home council before applying. The SET must be taken at a Sutton test centre; there is no overseas testing.

How to apply
Test registration is separate from your home council’s secondary school application.
If your child already has an EHCP, use your council’s EHCP coordinator route and still register for the tests. While an EHCP assessment is unfinished, submit the ordinary council application.
Register for the SET
Complete one online SET registration for the participating schools by the July deadline. This also serves as the supplementary form.
Take the SET
Attend the assigned venue and session. Your test centre does not decide your school preferences.
Attend the second stage if invited
Take both papers if invited. Sutton Grammar emails the second-stage outcome before 31 October, in time to complete your CAF.
Apply through your home council
Name Sutton Grammar School on your CAF by 31 October in your genuine preference order. Passing the tests does not itself create a school application.
Receive your council’s offer
Your home council sends the outcome on 1 March 2027. Follow the response instructions in its offer letter.

How places are allocated
150 Year 7 places. The school applies the following priorities to eligible applicants.
The EHCP route comes first
Children whose EHCP names Sutton Grammar School are allocated first if they meet the school’s selective standard. These placements reduce the remaining places.
Looked-after and previously looked-after boys
For boys looked after at SET registration, or qualifying previously looked-after boys, after EHCP placements. Report the status to the school’s admissions officer.
Children of permanent school staff
A parent must be employed by the Trust at the school on a permanent contract continuously for at least two years at SET registration.
Up to 10 Pupil Premium places in the postcode area
For boys meeting the school’s FSM Ever 6 Pupil Premium definition at SET registration and living in the listed postcodes on 31 October, ranked by combined test score.
75 places in the postcode area
For boys living in the listed postcodes on 31 October, ranked by combined test score.
Remaining places
Ranked by combined test score, from any postcode. Unused Pupil Premium or postcode places join this allocation.
Which looked-after children qualify?
This includes children in local-authority care or accommodation, and children who left care immediately through adoption, a child arrangements order or a special guardianship order. It also includes children adopted after state care outside England. The school requires evidence.
Pupil Premium definition
At SET registration, your child’s current school must have received Pupil Premium funding, with funding for the year from 1 September 2026 based on free-school-meal eligibility (FSM Ever 6). Parents must tick the FSM box and supply the requested registration information so the Trust can verify eligibility.
Equal scores and the waiting list
Equal ranks at a category’s allocation boundary are decided by nearer straight-line distance to the school’s front door in Manor Lane, measured by Sutton’s GIS. The policy does not give a further rule for an equal-distance tie.
The waiting list follows the same oversubscription criteria until 31 December 2027. Parents who made a valid application and were refused a place can appeal.

Test invitation
Bring a printed invitation showing the candidate number, venue and session.
Pupil Premium evidence
Tick the FSM box and give the required information at SET registration. After your child qualifies through the tests, the school contacts you about proof from the primary school. Confirm the school’s FSM Ever 6 definition and funding year.
Looked-after or staff priority
Tell admissions about the relevant status and provide the evidence needed to confirm the policy’s care or employment conditions.
SEND or medical arrangements
The request and evidence deadline was 12 June 2026. Your primary school SENCO must submit evidence through the dedicated link sent after registration. Contact SET SEND admissions about your child’s arrangements.
If your child is unwell on test day
Follow the unfit-to-sit instructions in your invitation before the assigned session starts. Supporting medical evidence is required.
