Before you apply
Entry requirements
Tiffin School uses two academic test stages and a distance-based Priority Area.
Who can apply
- Applicants
- Boys born 1 September 2015 – 31 August 2016.
- Test progression
- Applicants must be invited to and attend Stage Two. No part of the testing procedure may be repeated.
Outside the normal age group?
Write to the school’s Admissions Department before test registration. It considers individual circumstances.
The entrance tests
- Stage One
- Computer-marked English and maths. Standardised, age-weighted scores are averaged to decide progression.
- Stage Two
- Written English and maths, by invitation, in mid-November. The exact date is not yet published.
- Final combined score
- 50% Stage Two English and 50% maths. The maths component combines Stage One and Stage Two in a 2:3 ratio.
A one-time 10% Stage One threshold allowance applies to qualifying boys living in the Priority Area at the SIF deadline. It does not increase scores or remove the final 450th-ranked-score requirement for priority and aptitude places.
Who receives the Stage One allowance?
Looked-after or previously looked-after boys, Pupil Premium boys, and boys above the sport or music aptitude benchmark must live in the Priority Area at the SIF deadline. The allowance is applied once even if more than one condition is met.
Where you live
The Priority Area is strictly less than 10 km from Tiffin School. Applicants outside it have a separate category.

- Kingston measures the Ordnance Survey home address point to the Queen Elizabeth Road pedestrian gate. All floors in one block use the same start point.
- Your main home
- Kingston requires the child and parent to be habitually resident when applying and expects them to remain until school starts.
Moving or sharing care?
Use your home council’s current address rules. Kingston requires evidence and verification of a new address by 7 December 2026 for the first allocation. Occupying a property alone does not establish an accepted admissions address.

Application route
How to apply
Test registration is separate from your home council’s secondary school application.
The CAF is due before Stage Two. Submit it by 31 October without waiting for the mid-November test.
Register with the school
Submit the SIF and supporting evidence by the ordinary deadline. Sport or music applicants needed the earlier 6 July, 09:00 deadline.
Take Stage One
Follow your invitation for the session scheduled on or around 2 October. Progression notices are expected on or around 16 October.
Apply through your home council
Name Tiffin School on your CAF by 31 October. Kingston residents use eAdmissions; other residents apply to their home council.
Attend Stage Two if invited
Take both written tests in mid-November. Follow the invitation for the confirmed date. Your council sends offers on 1 March 2027.
Places & priorities
How places are allocated
180 Year 7 places, including up to nine sport and nine music aptitude places. Ordinary categories are allocated before the aptitude reservations are filled.
The looked-after, Pupil Premium and reserved aptitude categories require at least the 450th-ranked combined score among all Stage Two candidates and residence in the Priority Area.
A · EHCP placements
Boys with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) naming Tiffin School follow the council SEND route. They must demonstrate ability through the school’s testing process.
B · Looked-after, then Pupil Premium boys
Looked-after and previously looked-after Priority Area boys first, then Pupil Premium boys in the area, each by combined score and subject to the 450th-ranked-score threshold.
C · Remaining Priority Area boys
Remaining ordinary places, less up to 18 aptitude reservations, are allocated by combined-score rank.
D · Boys outside the Priority Area
Any remaining ordinary places follow, by combined-score rank.
E · Up to nine sport aptitude places
For unplaced boys from A–D who live in the Priority Area, reach the 450th-ranked combined score and exceed the sport benchmark. Ranked by sport aptitude.
E · Up to nine music aptitude places
Allocated after sport, for unplaced boys meeting the same area and combined-score requirements and exceeding the music benchmark. Ranked by music aptitude.
How are equal scores or aptitude ranks decided?
For the 180th-place score tie or equal aptitude ranks, nearer official home-to-school distance wins. If distance is also equal, a person independent of the school makes a random draw.
Sport and music assessments
Both aptitude assessments have two parts before Stage One; progression to Part Two depends on Part One. Boys can participate in both. A benchmark and aptitude rank are separate from the academic combined score.
Family support
Documents & support
Send evidence through the school process and keep the SIF confirmation.
SEND or medical evidence
The school must receive supporting documentation by the SIF deadline for test adjustments. Supply evidence from the primary school and relevant professionals.
Looked-after or previously looked-after status
Provide the social worker’s letter or evidence of prior care and the relevant adoption, child-arrangements or special-guardianship order by the SIF deadline.
Pupil Premium or Service Pupil Premium
Provide primary-school or council evidence by the SIF deadline. The policy includes its specified means-tested free-school-meal, care and service-child cases.
Address changes
Keep evidence of your child’s accepted main home. Tell the school and home council about changes; Kingston requires first-round changes to be verified by 7 December.
