Outside the normal age group?
Provide supporting evidence at SET registration explaining your child’s individual needs. The consortium decides before the SET; requests are agreed only exceptionally. The SET can only be taken once.
The entrance tests
- SET
- Multiple-choice English and maths. Meet WCGS’s SET pass mark to progress.
- Second stage
- Written maths and English, shared with Sutton Grammar and Wilson’s. Meet WCGS’s combined qualifying standard.
WCGS’s final standardised score is two fifths SET and three fifths second-stage total. Each school applies its own qualification and ranking rules; passing is not an offer.
Where you live
Up to 15 places have postcode priority. Eligible boys outside these postcodes can apply through the other categories.

- SM1–SM7, KT4 8--, CR0 4-- and CR4 4--.
- Residence date
- Your child must live permanently at the priority-postcode address on 31 October 2026.
Only the listed parts of KT4, CR0 and CR4 qualify. Use the child’s permanent home; the council checks residence.
Shared care or moving home?
For shared care, provide a joint declaration of the living arrangements. Use the home where your child spends most of the school week. If time is split equally, parents choose the address; without agreement, the policy uses the address registered with the doctor, taking all evidence into account.
Your home council checks residence. Tell it about any move and supply the evidence it requests. An address used only to gain priority may invalidate an application or offer.
Living overseas or returning on a service posting?
The WCGS policy permits a linked local-authority address with evidence of return before September 2027. Without a linked address, it says the overseas address is used for distance; confirm the application route with your intended home council.
Service personnel with a confirmed local posting, or returning Crown servants, may use a unit or quartering address with an official letter giving the relocation date and address. The SET must be taken at a Sutton test centre.

How to apply
Test registration is separate from your home council’s secondary school application.
If your child already has an EHCP, use your council’s EHCP coordinator route and still register for the tests. While an EHCP assessment is unfinished, submit the ordinary council application.
Register for the SET
Complete one online SET registration for the participating schools by the July deadline. This also serves as the supplementary form.
Take the SET
Attend the assigned venue and session. Your test centre does not decide your school preferences.
Attend the second stage if invited
The school’s SET standard determines the invitation. Take both second-stage papers and read the school’s eligibility outcome.
Apply through your home council
Name Wallington County Grammar School on your CAF by 31 October in your genuine preference order. Passing the tests does not itself create a school application.
Receive your council’s offer
Your home council sends the outcome on 1 March 2027. Follow the response instructions in its offer letter.

Places & priorities
How places are allocated
150 Year 7 places. The school applies the following priorities to eligible applicants.
The first three priorities initially total no more than 110 places. Every category requires WCGS’s combined qualifying standard; EHCP placements reduce the remaining allocation.
The EHCP route comes first
Children whose EHCP names Wallington County Grammar School are allocated first if they meet the school’s selective standard. These placements reduce the remaining places.
Looked-after and previously looked-after boys
First priority after EHCP placements, including qualifying children adopted after state care outside England.
Children of permanent school staff
A parent must have at least two consecutive years’ employment at WCGS when applying, or have been recruited to a post with a demonstrable skill shortage.
Initial score-ranked places
Other eligible boys are ranked by test performance. Together with the first two priorities, this initial allocation is capped at 110.
Up to 25 Pupil Premium places
For boys eligible for Pupil Premium through their current school on the CAF deadline, 31 October, ranked by test performance.
Up to 15 priority-postcode places
For boys living permanently in the listed postcodes on 31 October, ranked by test performance.
Which looked-after children qualify?
This includes children in local-authority care or accommodation, and children who left care immediately through adoption, a child arrangements order or a special guardianship order. It also includes children adopted after state care outside England. The school requires evidence.
Unfilled places and equal ranks
Unused Pupil Premium or postcode places on National Offer Day and afterwards return to the score-ranked third priority.
Equal ranks at the allocation boundary are decided by nearer straight-line distance from the centre of the home property to the school’s front entrance, measured by Sutton’s GIS. A remaining tie is resolved by lots drawn by a senior trust officer independent of the school’s admissions process.
Waiting lists and appeals
Eligible boys who ranked WCGS above their offered school join the waiting list, ordered by the same priorities, until 31 December 2027. Vacancies during March–December use that list without a further entrance test.
The policy asks for September 2027 appeals by 16 April 2027, for hearings by 21 June where specified. Check the school’s appeal instructions after receiving the decision.

Keep the evidence for your child’s test arrangements and any priority claim.
Test invitation
Bring a printed invitation showing the candidate number, venue and session.
Pupil Premium evidence
After your son reaches the qualifying test standard, the school requests a letter or email from his primary school. It must confirm Pupil Premium eligibility at the CAF deadline, 31 October; this is separate from the earlier access-arrangement deadline.
Looked-after or staff priority
Provide the evidence needed to confirm the policy’s care status or permanent-staff employment conditions.
SEND or medical arrangements
The request and evidence deadline was 12 June 2026. Your primary school SENCO must submit evidence through the dedicated link sent after registration. Contact SET SEND admissions about your child’s arrangements.
If your child is unwell on test day
Follow the unfit-to-sit instructions in your invitation before the assigned session starts. Supporting medical evidence is required.
